The Learning Connection

We are committed to the empowerment and equality of women and girls through education.

The Learning Connection for Adult Education, Inc

The CSJ Learning Connection for Adult Education is a private, non-profit educational program sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, New York. As an independent community-based organization, The Learning Connection is affiliated with the Brentwood Public School District and the Brentwood Public Library, all of which aim to serve the educational needs of adults in the Brentwood area.  Classes meet five days a week, Monday through Friday, from September to June. Students are expected to attend class every day from 9:30 A.M. until 12:15 P.M. An optional enrichment class is offered from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M.

The Mission

Specifically, The Learning Connection aims to provide the tools for the empowerment of women who are undereducated, lack a high school diploma, or speak languages other than English. In a multicultural, non-competitive setting, participants follow the course of study suited to their needs, abilities and personal goals.  At the present time 215 women, mostly from Latin America, attend The Learning Connection. They represent 18 countries and speak six different languages.

The Staff and Instructional Strategies

The staff of The Learning Connection consists of two administrators/teachers, thirteen ESL teachers from the Brentwood Public School District, and twenty-two volunteers, all of whom are retired teachers.

In small groups, participants learn to listen, speak, read and write English using state of the art educational
materials. A multi-media approach, through the use of computer software, the Internet, DVD’s, videos, and tapes enhances the ESL curriculum. Reading and discussion on topics related to American history and culture are an integral part of the ESL curriculum. Consumer literacy is also an essential part of the program. Students are grouped by levels according to the state-mandated Best Plus and Best Literacy tests.

Family Support

Parents are taught how to read to their children and are encouraged to participate in programs at their local library.  Parenting, nutrition, personal and family health issues, and child development are also addressed through enrichment workshops. In addition, parents with school-aged children are taught how to communicate with their children’s schools and are encouraged to participate in the educational process, school life, and community activities. Additional workshops include domestic violence and immigration.

25th Anniversary Celebration

We are proud to celebrate 25 years of ministry and service at The Learning Connection.  We are grateful to Sister Kathleen Carberry who through her leadership was able to turn an idea into a  flourishing reality. We also thank her able assistant Sister Mary Theresa Donlon and all those  Sisters, Board Members, Teachers and Volunteers who were such an integral part of these past years. Your efforts will be visible in the lives of the women who have completed their studies with you.
