Our Services
Asylum Applications (I-589)
Completing the I-589, Application for Asylum, is the leading service offered by LIIC. Our clinic provides this service in a “Full Clinic” and “Quick Clinic” model for immigrants needing legal help.
Full Clinic
-
Each case begins with an initial interview, where LIIC staff meet with the applicant to gather their story and background.
-
If their case is accepted, LIIC staff and volunteers assist the individual in the preparation and completion of the I-589 application, personal affidavit, and supporting evidence, to include country conditions that support their asylum claim.
-
Lastly, LIIC compiles all necessary documents and assists as needed with document translations.
Quick Clinic
- Offered to individuals coming close to the one-year deadline for asylum applications.
- Each case begins with an initial interview and gathering of information, like in Full Clinic.
- If the case is accepted, LIIC assists with the completion of the I-589 application (12 pages). No affidavit or supporting documentation is submitted.
Employment Authorization Documents (I-765)
Asylum applicants become eligible for work permits (EADs) after 150 days have elapsed from the receipt of the asylum application by the asylum office (USCIS) or immigration court (EOIR).
This is an important milestone, as it allows individuals to begin working legally and supporting themselves while their cases are pending. It is also an essential step that enables applicants to demonstrate their willingness to contribute and work lawfully in the eyes of immigration authorities.
Additional Services
Legal Consultation
LIIC provides free legal consultations by appointment only. We also provide legal assistance with the preparation of various legal motions, including change of address, change of venue, request for a WEBEX/virtual court hearing, among others.
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)
On a limited basis, LIIC will assist with the completion and filing of SIJS applications for children under the age of 21 who are undocumented and have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents.
Social Services Support
We provide referrals to outside organizations for mental health and medical consults, basic needs, and other vital services.
Future Services
Motion To Re-Open
Motion to reopen is a vital tool in protecting the rights of asylum seekers facing removal proceedings. Through these motions, attorneys can request that the court revisit prior decisions, correct procedural errors, or consider new evidence that may affect an applicant’s eligibility for relief. In many cases, reopening a case allows individuals to pursue asylum or other legal protections that were previously unavailable.
Citizenship Services
N-400, N-600, Interview Preparation, and More
Assisting immigrants with the N-400 Application for Naturalization and the N-600 Application for Certificate of Citizenship is a crucial part of helping immigrants achieve full legal integration in the United States. These applications allow eligible individuals to become U.S. citizens or obtain proof of citizenship derived from their parents. Preparing applicants for the citizenship interview further ensures they feel confident and informed throughout the process. LIIC hopes to provide citizenship classes in the near future.
