Reflection
Crisis reveals the character of a person and of a nation. The sacrifices we are willing to make for the common good or not willing to make show who we are. The understanding and compassion we show or cannot show measure our humanity. The decisions we make indicate our values. The priorities we set are a measure of our selfishness. We are in awe of those who risk their own safety each day for the needs of others. We are angered by those who choose to ignore rules meant to control infection. We are appalled by those who weigh the value of lives against the health of the economy. The current crisis is painting a clear picture of America from its leadership to its individual citizens.

I renew my closeness to all who are sick and to those who care for them, to the many workers and volunteers that help the persons who cannot leave their homes, as well as to all those who reach out to the very poor and the homeless. When faced with a radical crisis, when the old way of being in the world, of interacting with each other and with the realm of nature doesn’t work anymore, when survival is threatened by seemingly insurmountable problems, an individual life-form — or a species — will either die or become extinct or rise above the limitations of its condition through an evolutionary leap.

Great occasions do not make heroes or cowards; they simply unveil them to our eyes. Silently and imperceptibly, as we wake or sleep, we grow strong or weak; and at last some crisis shows what we have become.
