International Woman’s Day
Reflection
Patriarchy locates power in males and views females and children as inferior. It influences all areas of society including culture, family, school, the workplace and relationships. Although patriarchy is believed to have originated in the tribal marriage practices of 3100 BC, and in more recent times there have been some positive shifts in attitudes, legally and socially, it is still present in the year 2025. Inequality and gender-based violence against women and girls still threatens their safety, happiness and very existence in a multitude of ways. Because of this, International Women’s Day is held to Inform us and raise our awareness.
Jesus regularly addressed women directly while in public. This was unusual for a man to do. He spoke to women in a thoughtful, caring manner and demonstrated only the highest regard for women, in both his life and teaching. He recognized the intrinsic equality of men and women, and continually showed the worth and dignity of women as persons. Jesus valued the fellowship, prayers, service, financial support, testimony and witness of women. He honored women, taught women, and In early Christianity, even though women often did not function as the primary teachers, they were still highly regarded and served in a ariety of ways. This was the teaching of Jesus. All the layers of control are based in patriarchy.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Accelerate Action,” focusing on strategies designed to promote women’s advancement.
Prayer
May we love and respect one another as equals.
Action
Examine yourself for your acceptance of role stereotypes and your support of inequalities. Change where necessary. Teach girls in your family that they are strong, capable, more important than their personal appearance, and deserving of the same respect as boys. Praise them equally for their intelligence, strength, leadership, and athleticism. Encourage girls to speak out and assert themselves and show them the possibilities of their potential. Teach boys they are equal to not superior to girls.

Only in the last half of the twentieth century did women begin to break down educational barriers and enter new world arenas. Only then did women historians begin to uncover the unpublished, unhung, unmarketed works of women from centuries past. Only then did ideas like these ever hope to see the light in print. Now we take the words for granted, but we fail to admit that nothing much has changed as a result of them.
