Sister Francis Claire Gowen, CSJ

Sistr Francis Claire was remembered at a Month’s Mind Memorial Mass on October 16th celebrated by Bishop Ray Chappetto in Sacred Heart Chapel.  Bishop Chappetto proudly stated that Sister Francis was his 1st-grade teacher in Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria.  He spoke of Sister Francis’ kindness, patience and holiness.  He was also grateful that she taught him how to pray as well as how to put on his galoshes.

After 11 years of teaching, Sister Francis went on to study nursing and ministered faithfully and compassionately for the next 36 years of her life.  Her gentle, warm, loving smile and professional skills endeared her to everyone.

Beginning in 2000, Francis graced the community in St. Joseph Convent with her caring presence as a Pastoral Minister and continued faithfully serving as Eucharistic Minister at daily mass.

“Well done good and faithful servant” were Bishop Chappetto’s final words at her mass,  capturing Francis’  life of 75 years as a Sister of St. Joseph.

Francis will be missed, especially by her dear friend, Sister Chris Adams, but her legacy of love lives on.

Sister Francis Claire Gowen, CSJ died on September 16, 2024 in the 75th year of her religious life.
