Sister Miriam Christine McCullough. CSJ

We are here to celebrate the life of woman, who with dignity and grace, answered the call to be a Sister of St. Joseph almost seventy-five years ago.

Born in Brooklyn to Christine and John, Catherine McCullough attended St. Jerome’s parish school and Fontbonne Hall Academy. Soon after high school Catherine entered the congregation and received the name Miriam Christine. Miriam Christine earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Molloy College and a Masters from C. W. Post College as a Reading Specialist.

Her education enabled her to be an excellent teacher for over fifty years. Miriam Christine taught elementary grades in Immaculate Conception, Jamaica, St. Malachy’s Holy Name of Mary, Nativity, St. Francis de Chantal, St, Angela Hall, St. Christopher’s, Blessed Sacrament, St. Anne’s and St. Bernard’s.

For over forty years Miriam Christine also taught CCD classes and was a Eucharistic Minister. Her life was a witness to beauty and grace: grace that came from her deep faith and close relationship with a loving God. She shared that faith with her students and her love of order and beauty formed the lives of countless children in her classes.

Miriam Christine loved her life as a Sister of St. Joseph and was sustained by close friendships with S. Margaret Mary and Madeline Haggerty, Fr. Tom’s mother, a co-teacher from St. Bernard’s. She enjoyed nice things, companionship, outings especially to Hampton Bays, Monticello and most of all a Mets Game.

Miriam had grace and courage when faced with illness and pain. Behind her warm smile was a confidence that God accompanied her in all things and she would one day enjoy what Isaiah foretold: On this mountain God will provide for all people….God will destroy death….God will wipe away all tears. Miriam Christine can now rejoice and be glad because she enjoys eternal peace with her loving God and all who loved her in this life.

Sister Miriam Christine McCullough, CSJ died on February 2, 2020 in the 75th year of her religious life.
