Sister Patricia Melley

We come together as a worshipping community to celebrate and give thanks for the faith-filled life of Sister Patricia Melley, formerly Sister Mary Patriciana, a Sister of St. Joseph for 77 fruitful years.

Pat was the oldest of 6 children born to Michael and Sarah Boyle Melley, proud Irish immigrants from County Donegal.  Her siblings, Rose, Muriel (Sister Stephen Maura), Hugh, Stephen, and Sheila, along with Pat, were nurtured with great love, an active faith, and a strong work ethic interlaced with a spirit of hospitality and welcome to those in need.  They lived on the same block as St. Teresa Avila Parish, Brooklyn, with the Church and all of the richness of its parish life as the focal point of their

After graduating from Bishop McDonnell High School, where Pat experienced the lived charism of our Sisters, she entered the community and embarked on a stellar, joyful path as a teacher par excellence!

For 25 years, Pat taught at the elementary level in six different parish schools, always with the well-being and care of each child’s intellectual and spiritual needs as her focus.  The stories of that era of her life were filled with humility and grace, inclusive of all the wonderful sisters who shared life with her.

While teaching elementary school, Pat obtained a BA in History from St. Francis College and an MA from Villanova University.

In 1970, she was called forth to teach Social Studies in the Academy of St. Joseph in her beloved Brentwood.  For the next 30 years, her skilled and gentle presence changed the lives of countless young women by opening up the vast histories of our country and our world cultures.  Social media is ablaze with tributes to the power of Pat’s years as a teacher ~ and I paraphrase . . .  “Sister Pat brought history to life ~ we ran to class as if it were a soap opera ~  she had a passion for teaching and we are better human beings because of her.”    (Over 400 + comments from her students)

Many Sisters have commented that while Pat was often a quiet presence in the midst of ordinary chaos, she often brought people back to center with a clever and humorous perspective ~ “quick wit” as the Irish would say.

Retirement from teaching brought Pat to an Administrative Assistant role at the Academy for eight  years.  Her kindness and gentle, reassuring smile were cherished by all.   In 2009, Pat moved into St. Joseph Convent and entered peacefully into its rich, welcoming environment where daily Eucharist, prayer, quiet time, and recreational activities centered her life.

With appreciation for all that she was given, Pat grew in a deeper relationship with her God, and her gracious, kind manner endeared her to her aides, nurses, staff, and all those she encountered each day.

Her life as a Sister of St. Joseph for 77 years was richly blessed, and today we rejoice and give thanks to our gracious God for Pat’s life lived with simplicity, prayerfulness, courage, and compassion.

May she continue to be with us, pray with us, inspire us.

We’re blessed that Stephen, Pat’s beloved brother will offer a reflection on behalf of the family she loved so dearly.

Sister Patricia Melley, the former Sister Patriciana, died on November 5, 2025 in the 77th year of her religious life.
