JPIC in the Room!
On Monday, February 11th S. Susan Wilcox, JPIC Coordinator, attended the Legislative Hearing On Replacement of Gas Power Plants at NYC City Hall Council Chambers. She was there with 350.org and other advocacy groups to show support for NYC Bill #1318 to examine replacing gas filled peaker plants with battery storage, citing the environmental and health risks to the surrounding Queens communities. A topic was the power plant explosion in December 28, 2018 in Astoria that turned the night sky blue. Council Member Costa Constantinides (District 22) grilled Con Ed representatives on the cause of the explosion at the peaker plant and the lack of a community plan to notify residents what was happening and what they should do. Several areas experienced power outages including Rikers Island. The next step is a feasibility study to access the best plan in regards to peaker plants within NYC’s larger environmental goals.
