Sisters of Saint Joseph Federation Promotes Leadership Skills
After several years of discussion among the CSSJ Federation leadership, the Leaders as Leaven program was begun last year. This past July ten Sisters from the Brentwood Congregation joined about 65 other CSSJ’s in Latham at the Carondolet Hospitality Center for Leaders as Leaven, year two. The participants, required to be under the age of 60, commit to a year long program, participating in a five day experience to begin and end the year.
Sisters began a year of honing and developing their leadership skills. The sisters from the Brentwood community are S. Suzanne Franck, S. Janet Kinney, S. Kerry Handal, and S. Susan Snyder. Sisters Mary Ellen Kane, Pat Lucas, Eileen Brennan, Maryann McHugh and Jane Reilly are also part of the program in the capacity of mentors. S. Karen Burke is a member of the intercongregational steering committee for this program.
Sr. Barbara Bozak welcomed the group and set the tone, and an opening ritual and prayer set the stage for a powerful five day session. Our days included wonderful presentations by Donna Clerico SSJ and Lynn Levo CSJ, personal reflection guided by the 360 Leadership Circle profile, and sharing of the heart. Throughout the year, participants read assigned articles, reflect on materials provided, share monthly with their assigned mentor as well as the table group of sisters from our Latham days.
Sisters each received a mentor with whom they will continue to communicate during the coming year. Reactions from our sisters who participated were very positive. The Leaders as Leaven program provides an insightful approach for us to develop our best leadership skills and foster our deep love and commitment to the CSSJ Congregation. We are blessed to be sharing in this journey of discovery.
