November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It launches the 16 days of the theme for 2019 ”Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape.” It concludes on International Human Rights Day, December 10. (www.unwomen.org)
This year three significant international actions bring together the instruments and attention to fight for protection of women from violence:
- To emphasize the devastating impact of rape, the UN Secretary-General has announced that for the next two years his UNITE to End Violence Campaign will also focus on the issue of rape.
- In June 2019 the International Labor Organization adopted Convention 109 and Recommendation 206 which provides instruments on ending violence and harassment in the world of work. Once a nation has ratified the Convention 109 and R206 it becomes an instrument of International law nations are obliged to enforce. (https://www.ilo.org).
- In 2000, Resolution 1325, Women, Peace and Security, was adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council. It recognized the violence against women in armed conflict and the special measures and responsibilities of the UN to protect them from sexual violence. (S/RES/1325).
