Pastoral Care News

S. Virginia  Down, CSJ recently completed her studies for the Geriatric Spiritual Care Certificate Course offered by the Avila Institute for Gerontology under the direction of Sister Peter Lillian, O. Carm. During this course, which consists of four weekends and one week of clinical e

xperience, participants are prepared to serve in the field of elder care and serve the specific spiritual needs of elders. The program is taught in a team approach by a diverse and expert group of faculty – which includes our own S. Annelle Fitzpatrick, CSJ.

Topics included the Dynamics of Spiritual Care, Theology of Suffering, Active Listening, Moral Ethics and Palliative Care.

S.Ginny offered the following thoughts on her experience, “This year it was my privilege to take part in this marvelous experience.  In addition to having “experts” in this field, I was delighted to be with seven others, who like me, have done some ministry in this area, and who shared their own knowledge with all of us and our presenters. Along the way, we also had great fun. In addition to learning a great deal, I came to understand my own experiences in Ministry in a deeper way.

On the Solemnity of Pentecost, the eight of us celebrated the completion of this course with the Sisters of the Aged and Infirm at their Motherhouse. They commissioned us to do this Ministry with both knowledge and love.” Congratulations Ginny!
