Sacred Heart Academy honored Sister Karen Burke, CSJ with the Justice and Peace Tribute for her work on environmental preservation and social justice. This award is given annually to someone who has made a difference by her work in an area of justice. In the area of earth justice and of creation viewed as the ‘dear neighbor”, Sister Karen has carried forward the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph by spearheading the implementation of their Land Ethic Statement on Brentwood campus and beyond. Her leadership in the use of solar energy, sustainability, preservation of the land through agriculture, the preservation of woodlands and in alternate methods of waste management have made the Brentwood campus a model for those seeking to foster environmental sustainability.In her acceptance remarks, Sister Karen challenged the students and faculty to become involved in the actions for climate restoration.
Sacred Heart Academy has made the environment its priority for the coming school year.
