The Sisters of St. Joseph Brentwood Mission Fund has been able to offer grants to two important community organizations this year – one at St. Anne’s in Brentwood and one Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyndanch. Sister Elizabeth Myles, who worked at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal for almost 20 years, nominated the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center at the parish to receive a grant of $3,000 this year.

Sister Elizabeth was running the Gerald Ryan Outreach Summer Camp when Naycha Florivals was a young teenager who loved attending the camp. A few years later, Naycha became a counselor, and she admired the way Sister Liz managed so many details. All of this turned out to be excellent training for Naycha’s future position as Director of the camp. Nycha is now the Program Director of the Outreach Center (including the summer camp),  which is a mainstay in the community of Wyndanch. The services provided by the Outreach Center include: Food Pantry, Clothing Room, After School Program, Summer Camp, Senior Delivery, Four Season Garden, Financial Supports, Emergency Prescription Assistance, Holiday Support, Back to School Support, and Tuesday’s Winter Shelter.

Though summer camp could not take place this year due to COVID-19 (a virtual option was made available), the Outreach Center is busier than ever. The center is operating with a very limited staff and went from serving 1100 individuals a month pre-covid, to 1200 a week currently. The center is running a delivery program to get food and necessities to seniors and COVID-positive individuals in the community.
