Reflection
Thanksgiving has passed and we are being seduced by sales and ads proclaiming the perfect Christmas gifts for everyone. In our country gift-giving has become big business. Frustrated by crowds, traffic and commercialism, we can be tempted at this time of year to opt out of gift giving altogether. Yet, giving gifts is an important part of human interaction helping to define relationships and strengthen bonds with family and friends. Choosing gifts and giving to others reinforces our feelings for them and makes us feel connected and caring. A gift is meant to be free and it can refer to anything that makes the other happier or less sad. The actual definition of a gift is the transfer of something without the expectation of payment. The best effect of gift giving may be on ourselves. It makes us happy to see those we love happy.

Prayer

Let the material gifts I give be an extension of my love not a replacement for it.

Actions

Consider to whom you will be giving gifts and why. Take pleasure in the selection and the wrapping of your gifts. Make them an extension of your affection and caring.
