Reflection
Jesus offers two images of his expectations for his followers: salt and light.
Salt in a small amount flavors the whole in an invisible way. Light banishes darkness and makes our vision clear. Both make a difference when they are present. That’s our responsibility to live in a way that makes a difference – a way that is not bland and unimaginative but one that sees clearly the fullness of life’s meaning and flavors the lives of others with new hope. It is about this world, and about our life and witness in this world. It is about politics, about economics and about culture. It is about our environment, about the destruction of nuclear weapons. It is about peace. It is about our deeds in society. To be salt and light is to follow Jesus, struggling to bring about justice, to safeguard human rights and work for peace and reconciliation. It’s about try to bring about the reign of God in the here and now.

May we try to be light and salt in our world.
