Reflection
“He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Mk 7:31-37
Hearing and speech form our perceptions and enable us to articulate what we understand. When Jesus restored the deaf-mute person, he was restoring his ability to image and perceive. The healing liberated him as well. Now he could rejoin the community from which he had been separated by his inability to communicate. He was enabled to know the “good news”. Jesus’ actions affirmed the connection between God and humanity. They contributed to the building of a community that could foster life in its fullness. He set right the ability to understand and then to spread his message. On seeing it, the gospel tells us, the people were over-whelmed with astonishment at what had been done.
Prayer
