The Sisters of St. Joseph brought home the inaugural Sustainability and Environmental Award at the 14th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards last night at the Crest Hollow Country Club. S. Karen Burke, CSJ, member of the leadership team, accepted the award, which was sponsored by Chase for Business, on behalf of Heather Coste, Director of the CSJ Department of Ecological Sustainability, and Heather Bolkas, Manager of the CSJ Garden Ministry.
“The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded more than 375 years ago in Le Puy, France, but 130 years ago, we came to Long Island,” S. Karen said while accepting the award. “We talk about our charism, love of God and neighbor without distinction. And that distinction has gone beyond people, moving to include all of nature and all of creation.”
This award honors a Long Island-based organization committed to environmental sustainability and initiatives that protect local habitats, promote ecological responsibility, and support a greener future. Each day, these ideals are given expression through the work done by the Ecological Sustainability team and the Garden Ministry.
“It is our relationship with the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers, who are also here tonight, that helps to remind us that the decisions we make today need to be decisions for the next seven generations.”
Congratulations to all, and abundant gratitude to Cerini Associates, LLP, which created and continues to produce the annual Long Island Imagine Awards.
