This course traces the development of Protestantism, beginning with Martin Luther and his break with Roman Catholicism, continuing with the growth of denominations in Europe and the United States. It concludes with the development of evangelicalism, fundamentalism, and the rise of religious nationalism culminating in the elections of President Donald Trump.

Evelyn Kirkley, Ph.D., was a professor of theology and religious studies at the University of San Diego for 28 years. She specializes in the religious history of the United States, with particular attention to Protestantism, minoritized and marginalized religious movements, and the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality with U.S. religion.
