The threads of our experiences and relationships create the unique fabric of our lives. Like a woven tapestry this weaving produces a fabric fashioned by varied colored experiences. Uncolored threads, the warp, are covered by the colored threads of the weft. When completed all the warp threads are hidden. The backside of a tapestry appears to be nothing more than a jumble of thread—tangled, frayed, occasionally knotted, and seemingly random. It is when you turn the tapestry over that you see the art, the rich colors, the texture, and the patterns that can make a tapestry a thing of amazing beauty. So it is with the tapestry we call life. Our lives have both sides. Woven together they are our unique expression of who we have become.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Examine the threads that have formed the tapestry of your life. Find the pattern that brought you to now. Be grateful.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
I want you woven into a tapestry of love,in touch with everything there is to know of God.
As I look back at the entire tapestry of life, I can see from the perspective of the present moment that every aspect of life was necessary and perfect. Each step eventually led to a higher place, even though these steps often felt like obstacles or painful experiences.
The tapestry of life continues to be woven. Occasionally a chance arises to repair an older, tattered piece of the weave. Something happens to jolt our awareness back in time to an event that resulted in tears and rips. We see the circumstances in present time and have compassion for the unclear events of the past. While the new experience is being woven into the design, the old rip is simultaneously being repaired. All is well.
As we weave the tapestries of our lives, we gradually begin to see our designs from a wider angle of years. No design–not in the living world–is carved in stone. We can change our designs as we wish. We are each a thread in the tapestry of our human family. Our outcome is woven of endless possibilities, because we can choose from a universe of endless possibilities.
Destiny itself is like a wonderful wide tapestry in which every thread is guided by an unspeakable tender hand, placed beside another thread and held and carried by a hundred others.”
Time unfolds beauty, wonder, and mystery to reveal the auspicious tapestry of life.”
We look at life from the back side of the tapestry. And most of the time, what we see is loose threads, tangled knots and the like. But occasionally, God’s light shines through the tapestry, and we get a glimpse of the larger design with God weaving together the darks and lights of existence.
