Prayer is not a stratagem for occasional use, or a refuge to resort to now and then. it is rather like an established residence for the innermost self. All things have a home, the bird has a nest, the fox has a hole, the bees have a hive. A soul without prayer is a soul without a home.
Abraham Joshua Heschel
Lord, teach us to pray.
Although you can pray anywhere, establish a prayer space for yourself. Make it a place where you can retreat to pray sometime each day. If you can, set a routine time for this.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to God, who is unseen. Then God, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
Never forget the three powerful resources you always have available to you: love, prayer, and forgiveness.
Jackson Brown, Jr.
To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.
Prayer does not change God, but it changes him who prays.
Prayer is an act of love; words are not needed. Even if sickness distracts from thoughts, all that is needed is the will to love.
Saint Teresa of Avila
Prayer is the beginning and the end, the source and the fruit, the core and the content, the basis and the goal of all peacemaking.
Just as you wouldn’t leave the house without taking a shower, you shouldn’t start the day without at least 10 minutes of sacred practice: prayer, meditation, inspirational reading.
Prayer doesn’t just change things – it changes us. If we are diligent in seeking God, slowly and surely we become better people.
There is a mighty lot of difference between saying prayers and praying.
John G. Lake
