Reflection

It is increasingly obvious that this country is rapidly dividing itself into camps of distrust, division, instability, and subliminal rage. Sadly, it also seems that we are becoming conditioned to senseless violence. Meanwhile, rather than address the issues, this country is being crippled with petty partisan politics. Why do organizations whose values ultimately enable violence have such power over elected officials? Can money buy integrity so easily? As the divisions widen and the hate speech intensifies, do we wonder why we accept this deterioration so quietly? Why are those who spew hate and ignorance given public prominence? Where are those who remind us of who we are? Where is our unity of purpose?  Why are we still so stuck in our old prejudices? ”If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” How far must things go before we acknowledge what is happening?

Prayer

Give us the wisdom and courage to act for unity and peace.

Action

Look back and trace all the incidents of violence that have happened in the past several years. Think of the incidents labeled as “hate crimes”. What can you do in your conversations, your attitudes, and with your vote to work toward a more healthy nation?
