Reflection

Now that the shopping is over, the gifts are unwrapped, the cards have been sent, and the carols are sung, what about Jesus? Have we embraced the baby and forgotten the man? Is his message as important as whether or not the shopping season had the hoped for effect on the economy? In the midst of the past frenetic days have we thought of what love, nonviolence and inclusivity might mean among us?

Howard Thurman said it so well:

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among people,
To make music in the heart.

Prayer

May I live the real meaning of Christmas.
Let my actions reflect the Person and not merely cling to the season.

Action

Let what you believe is the meaning and promise of Christmas Day be seen in your home and your celebrations.

In switching on the light of the Nativity scene, we wish for the light of Christ to be in us. A Christmas without light is not Christmas. Let there be light in the soul, in the heart; let there be forgiveness to others; let there be no hostilities, which are dark. Let there be the beautiful light of Jesus.
Pope Francis

Our rich world has claimed Christmas for itself and has thrust
Jesus outside. Christmas has become a poetic fantasy, a friendly
atmosphere, an exchange of gifts, a symbol of light, stars and
carols, a boom in the sale of luxury goods. And who thinks of Jesus?
I would so like to found a business that would publicize the real
meaning of Christmas.
Chiara Lubich

Christmas is the last word pronounced over us. It tells us that we are loved, that we are free and that we are able to follow the way to God, that we are new-born and can begin again our life and our work of building up society. This word of hope lies behind all the greetings that we send to each other at Christmas.  It is the true meaning of all the presents we send to each other. The child who comes to us is the sign given to us that God has opened the door that leads to this way.
Carlo Maria Martini

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.
Calvin Coolidge

If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three words, these would be the words: “God with us.”
John F. MacArthur, Jr.

The event of Christ is the only event in human history that promises relocation and centering, meaning and purpose. This promise and its fulfillment evoke passionate and heartfelt praise and thanks, especially for those aware of their own brokenness and the healing which Christ brings into their lives.
Robert Webber
