Reflection

To turn away from marginalized people is to turn away from Jesus who identifies with them. As a nation, are our policies on immigration, our attitudes toward those in need of food stamps and health care, our tax policies in accord with this? Reflecting on the life of Jesus we see clearly that he always took the side of those who were powerless – the widow, the poor, the sinners, the sick.  He said our lives will also be judged by how we treat them.  “As you did to one of the least of my people, you did it to me”.

Prayer

O Compassionate God, help me to recognize the sacred in my ordinary everyday contacts with those who are in pain or deprived of the means of normal living.

Action

Try to see in every person a revelation of the love of God and act according to that insight. As a citizen, be aware of the words and actions of your political representatives. How do your expressed values mesh with the political agenda of this nation?

The message of Jesus shows us that the dignity of the human race is not found in its ability to control and dominate the Earth, nor is it found in the marvels of technology. Rather, our dignity is found in our intimate loving relationships within and among ourselves and with the whole community of species.
