In a culture like ours, we who are used to being independent and self-sufficient need to realize that we are also interdependent. We need teachers to share and explain the message of Christ; we need people with the gifts of prayer and faith to help carry those who are struggling; we need people who are gifted with their hands and imagination to create words, pictures, and images that present the gospel in a real and tangible way; we need people who have the gift of mercy and compassion to reach out and identify with those in need and we need people who can broaden our vision of ways in which we can reach out to people in our community and our world. We need each other and our individual abilities and talents to make the world what it ought to be. Our calling then is to discern where our gifts are needed. We are gifted to serve.
O God, help me to use my gifts for the good of all.
What talent or gift do I have that can contribute to the good of my family, workplace, community? Have I shared it? What can I do?
Brothers and sisters:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.
1 Cor 12:4-11
We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love.
If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place.
At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.
Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.
A wonderful realization will be the day you realize that you are unique in all the world. The world is an incredible unfulfilled tapestry, and only you can fulfill that tiny space that is yours.
You are unrepeatable. There is a magic about you that is all your own.
Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another’s uniqueness.
