The circumstances of our lives are another medium of God’s communication with us….. Through the wisdom of our bodies, God tells us to slow down or reorder our priorities. The happy coincidences and frustrating impasses of daily life are laden with messages. Patient listening and the grace of the Spirit are the decoding devices of prayer. It is a good habit to ask, What is God saying to me in this situation? Listening to our lives is part of prayer.

Speak, your servant is listening.
1 Samuel 3:9
How can you make the circumstances of your life a part of your insightful prayer?
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.
Every happening, great and small, is a parable whereby God speaks to us, and the art of life is to get the message.
Prayer is first of all listening to God. It’s openness. God is always speaking; God’s always doing something.

Our failure to hear God’s voice when we want to is due to the fact that we do not in general want to hear it, that we want it only when we think we need it.
God speaks repeatedly and in many different ways.
Is it possible that what we perceive to be relational, emotional, and spiritual problems are actually hearing problems — ears that have been deafened to the voice of God? And it’s that inability to hear God’s voice that causes us to lose our voice and lose our ways.
