We are coming to the end of July and summer is almost half over. Yet, if creation is the primary revelation of God, summer provides the contemplative eye with its own insights. Summer provides revelation in all colors. It has its own special sounds, its own special tastes. In nature there is an abundance, a variety and lush productivity. Summer is a season that believes in the miracle of growth and knows that new life is possible. It is a season to reflect on the magnificent earth that has given us birth within the loving providence of God’s mysterious creativity.
Let summer sing God’s praise.
Reflect on the sources of summer’s sounds and colors. Marvel in oceans and storms. See creation as a reflection of the Creator. What can a God be like who is the source of this creation?
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him?
O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
If God had wanted to be a big secret, He would not have created babbling brooks and whispering pines.
In summer, the song sings itself.
William Carlos Williams
I am in love with the green earth.
Nature is the art of God.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
