Freedom is a cherished value for us as Americans. In our civil traditions, this value is grounded not in license, but rather in reciprocal responsibility for each other. Yet, we become discouraged when we see so many of our elected officials acting not for the welfare of the country but for their enslavement to the ideologies of power. As citizens, we need to make judgments based on information that is valid and not on false, self-serving propaganda, and to demand that this truly be a government “ for the people, of the people and by the people.” We can only do this if we, ourselves, move beyond selfish motivations and shortsightedness and take responsibility for the welfare of all.
Bless our nation, O God, and guide us in right paths
Reflect on the freedoms you cherish as an American citizen. Identify the corresponding responsibility you have for each. How can you
join others to ensure that they will not be lost to those who seek their own power above the common good?
You blind guides, who strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
You shall…proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof
You shall not therefore oppress one another.
Only our individual faith in freedom can keep us free.
Dwight. D Eisenhower
Responsibility is the price of freedom.
He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.
Our American values are not luxuries but necessities, not the salt in our bread, but the bread itself. Our common vision of a free and just society is our greatest source of cohesion at home and strength abroad, greater than the bounty of our material blessings.
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.
Alexis de Tocqueville
Look around. Oil companies guzzle down the billions in profits. Billionaires pay a lower tax rate than their secretaries, and Wall Street CEOs, the same ones the direct our economy and destroyed millions of jobs still strut around Congress, no shame, demanding favors, and acting like we should thank them. Does anyone here have a problem with that?
