The birds know that Spring is coming. We may still see snow on the ground and feel the chill of the air, but the birds know better. Their calls are once again the music of early morning. Every day there seem to be more all singing on different notes. Life is stirring in earth after the rest of winter. It is time to listen, to watch and to see. Small green noses are poking above the ground and the tips of the tree twigs are tinted. It is still more than a week until the equinox, but life can’t wait. We may establish times and rituals, but earth lives by a rhythm of its own.

Terry Tempest Williams
