Repent and believe in the good news.
Mark 1:15

In the Hebrew Bible, to repent means primarily to return to God. Its metaphor is the exile. To repent means to return from Babylon to God. In the New Testament, repentance continues to have the same meaning. The gospel sees repentance as leaving what is obstructing life and following the way of Jesus. In the New Testament there is also a basis in the Greek roots of the word meaning “go beyond the mind that you have.” Go beyond the mind shaped by culture, the mind of routine, the unchallenged mind of dailiness, to the mind to which you have been called “in Christ”. Let go of the “old news” and be open to the amazing possibilities of a new vision.

May I repent and receive the good news.

How is this different from the usual view of repentance? Is it more meaningful for you? Where do you need “go beyond the mind that you have”?

The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”

Honesty before God requires the most fundamental risk of faith we can take: the risk that God is good, that God does love us unconditionally. It is in taking this risk that we rediscover our dignity. To bring the truth of ourselves, just as we are, to God, just as God is, is the most dignified thing we can do in this life.
Gerald May

The proud do not change to improve, but defend their position by rationalizing. Repentance means change, and it takes a humble person to change.
Ezra Taft Benson

We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of hope.
