Listening involves attention that is sincerely present to another. It enables us to tune in to others and to our own inner voices of intuition and conscience. Listening is how we know we are part of the world around us; it signals that we are not closed in on ourselves. Listening indicates that we are willing to communicate. A listening heart is transparent. It is willing to exchange truthfully with others and to accept their wisdom. A person who truly listens is open to the revelation of God that comes through people and the natural world
Grant to me, O Lord, a heart renewed. Fill me with your Spirit.
Tune in to the messages coming to you not only from people but from all directions and multiple levels of experience. Listen to a bird song, the waves on the beach, or the sounds of a city neighborhood, and you will come to a greater appreciation of your place in the universe.
Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
For listening is the act of entering the skin of the other and wearing it for a time as if it were our own. Listening is the gateway to understanding.
All things and all men, so to speak, call on us with small or loud voices. They want us to listen, they want us to understand their intrinsic claims, their justice of being…. But we can give it to them only through the love that listens.
The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.
One friend, one person who is truly understanding, who takes the trouble to listen to us as we consider a problem, can change our whole outlook on the world.
Dr. E. H. Mayo
To listen fully means to pay close attention to what is being said beneath the words. You listen not only to the ‘music,’ but to the essence of the person speaking. You listen not only for what someone knows, but for what he or she is. Ears operate at the speed of sound, which is far slower than the speed of light the eyes take in. Generative listening is the art of developing deeper silences in yourself, so you can slow our mind’s hearing to your ears’ natural speed, and hear beneath the words to their meaning.
Big egos have little ears.
To say that a person feels listened to means a lot more than just their ideas get heard. It’s a sign of respect. It makes people feel valued.
Listen. Do not have an opinion while you listen because frankly, your opinion doesn’t hold much water outside of Your Universe.
