October 27

We are living in a difficult time in human history but there have been difficult periods before. It is a time when we need those whose thinking can be creative. Creativity requires courage. It means taking what is ordinary and presenting it from a different perspective and in a new arrangement. It becomes a new thing, a break away from the usual. This carries the risk of rejection but also the possibility of progress. We are in a time calls us to be open and willing to take a chance on  another way of living. Holding on to what is comfortable might cause us to reject our contemporary visionaries and saints.

O God, give me the courage to recognize and to accept Your truth in whatever form it comes.

I will examine my attitudes. Do I find myself mired in a sense of cynicism and lack of hope? Am I stuck in “the way it always is” ? Do I regard creative ideas and new approaches with suspicion? How can I develop a healthy and common sense openness to new ideas?

When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”
