We cannot merely pray to God to end war.
We cannot merely pray to God to root out prejudice.
We cannot merely pray to God to end starvation.
We cannot merely pray to God to end despair
We cannot merely pray to God to end disease.
Therefore we pray to God
for strength, determination and will power,
to be instead of just to pray
to become instead of merely to wish.
Rabbi Jack Reimer
O God, give me the grace to bring about the things I pray for.
What practical thing can I do to help alleviate the problems that face us?
What group can I join to support or be a part of an action for justice?
What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear
and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them,
“Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, ”
but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it?
So also faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.
A Christian should always remember that the value of his good works is not based on their number and excellence, but on the love of God which prompts him to do these things.
St. John of the Cross
Love and charity, are service, helping others, serving others. There are many people who spend their lives in this way, in the service of others. When you forget yourself and think of others, this is love!
Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.
Jesus did not say that the whole world should go to church. Essentially He said that the church should go to the whole world.
Kingdom people seek first the Kingdom of God and its justice; church people often put church work above concerns of justice, mercy and truth. Church people think about how to get people into the church; Kingdom people think about how to get the church into the world. Church people worry that the world might change the church; Kingdom people work to see the church change the world.
This is the first generation in all of recorded history that can do something about the scourge of poverty. We have the means to do it. We can banish hunger from the face of the earth.
Hubert H. Humphrey
All men desire peace, but very few desire those things that make for peace.
Thomas a Kempis
Today it is fashionable to talk about the poor. Unfortunately, it is not fashionable to talk with them.
Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
