About Sisters of St. Joseph
The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in 1650 in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, by six women inspired and guided spiritually by Jesuit priest Jean-Pierre Médaille.
For over 169 years, the Sisters of St. Joseph have faithfully served the people of Long Island, responding to the needs of the times with compassion and commitment. Their mission has taken them beyond New York—to Appalachia, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and other regions of the United States.
In 1930, at the request of the Bishop of Ponce, four sisters established a mission in Puerto Rico. Their presence grew rapidly, with nearly 100 sisters eventually serving across the island in parishes, schools, and at the Catholic University. Today, Sisters of St. Joseph continue to live and minister in Puerto Rico, sustaining their legacy of service.
Members of the congregation serve as educators at every level—from elementary schools to universities—as well as social workers, healthcare professionals, attorneys, parish ministers, administrators, and spiritual directors.
The Sisters of St. Joseph also operate several independent ministries, including four high schools, a learning program for immigrant women, an immigration clinic, and a garden ministry.
Their mission continues to evolve, expanding into areas such as spiritual education, ecological sustainability, and justice-based initiatives—all grounded in a deep commitment to building a more just and compassionate world.
The Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, NY, have endured through generations by evolving with the times - adapting their mission to meet the needs of the modern world while faithfully preserving the core values of their founding sisters in France.
